The proposed project includes installing bus shelters, along with lighting, benches, and trash receptacles, at two bus stops— San Bernardino at Wildrose eastbound and Mount Vernon at Palm southbound. These two bus stops are on Omnitrans Routes 1 and 19, which connect Colton to San Bernardino, Fontana, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, Redlands, and Yucaipa. The stops are currently utilized by a combined 61 buses and 40 passengers per day. The upgrades will increase the quality of transit service to and from destinations within walking distance of these two stops, which include Plaza Las Glorias shopping center, Alice Birney Elementary School, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, Washington High School, West Valley Park, California University of Science and Medicine, and major residential developments such as the Westcourt Apartments and Wildrose Village. Two Omnitrans passengers who live within 0.6 miles of the Mt Vernon at Palm stop became eligible for Access paratransit service because of ADA accessibility issues at fixed route bus stops; thus, these improvements such as seating and shelters will make Omnitrans service more accessible for senior and disabled passengers and will encourage more usage of fixed- route bus services. The City of Colton is highly supportive of this project receiving TDA Article 3 grant funds. Please feel free to contact me at vortiz@coltonca.gov if you need any additional information.
