Project Need& Project Description
Purpose Statement of Need:
Yucca Valley is located in the High Desert region of San Bernardino County, where
summer temperatures routinely exceed 100°F. Many residents in this area rely on
public transportation for access to jobs, groceries, healthcare, and education.
However, many of the town's bus stops currently consist of nothing more than a
signpost, offering no protection from the elements. This is particularly problematic
for elderly riders, people with disabilities, and low-income families who are more
likely to rely on transit and may face health risks due to prolonged sun exposure.
The targeted locations of Mohawk Trail and Sunnyslope Drive, near low-income
apartment complexes and the Monterey Business Center at Indio Avenue and
Yucca Trail, were selected due to their proximity to vulnerable populations. Each
stop serves residents with limited access to air-conditioned vehicles or other modes
of transportation.Without shaded shelters or seating, riders often endure long waits
under dangerous conditions, discouraging transit use and exacerbating public health
risks.
Project Description and Goals:
This project will replace simple bus stop poles with durable,ADA-compliant shelters
that include seating and shade. The goals are to:
•Improve rider safety and comfort during extreme weather conditions.
•Promote equitable access to public transportation in underserved neighborhoods.
•Encourage increased ridership by making transit a more viable and humane
option.
•Reduce the carbon footprint by promoting public transit as an alternative to
personal vehicles.
Community Impact:
The new shelters will directly benefit low-income families, seniors, and workers in
Yucca Valley. Riders at the Mohawk Trail and Sunnyslope Drive locations live in
nearby low-income apartment complexes with few transportation alternatives. At the
Monterey Business Center, workers and customers frequent nearby shops and
services, making this a strategic location for investment. By improving basic
infrastructure, this project promotes dignity, access, and resilience in communities
that are often overlooked.
Project Schedule:
Both bus stop improvements are scheduled to be completed within one(1)year of
award notification.
Acknowledgement of previous TDA awards:
TDA Article 3 funds that were awarded in 2019 and 2021 were used to successfully
complete the respective bus stop improvement and bike locker projects.
